"In her first few years at the Academy, Kira didn't have any friends. She was quite shy,pudgy and soft-spoken, and the other kids picked on her for it. But despite her quiet demeanor, she was a quick study and performed well. She was more often than not bullied for her different colored eyes and her roundish figure. At home she didn't want her parents seeing that she was unhappy, and didn't speak about her problems.
That all changed when Temari noticed her during their lunch breaks.

Temari, as the daughter of the Kazekage, was taught privately with her brothers, and since she was known to be a fighter, she decided she would take a stand. During that lunch break, she scared away all the bullies that had been messing with her and made sure they knew that if they wanted to pick on Kira, they would have to go through Temari first. Kira wasn't important to Temari at the time, so she simply smiled at the redhead and went on her way with her brother, Kankurou. What Temari didn't plan on was that, after that, Kira saw her as a great Hero and idolized her. Usually this mean Kira would follow her around almost anywhere, and Temari tried constantly to lose her and give her the cold shoulder. When that didn't work, she eventually just tolerated her being around all the time. It wasn't a friendship at that point, but it was a beginning."
